Mon Apr 1 Town Meeting and April fool's day in old Connecticut. This town elected two Repbulican representatives by a large majority. (Elihu) Geer & Abrail Stark. This afternoon it commenced to snow.
Tue 2. It has snowed nearly all day, but the snow is very damp, consequently does not gain much. I have been ironing some and sewing some.
Sun Apr 21 Has been a very pleasant day. I wrote a letter to Harriet Tooker. Have been knitting drag nett for three days and feel pretty tired, but shall probably knit three day's longer. Have knit 70 yds. in the three days, Ellen knit 80 and Bell 57. This evening Father & Mother have gone to Mr Andersons & Ellen & Bell up into the streets. Oscar has been home and stayed 8 days he returned to Hartford last Friday night. Ebenezer Brockway has been home, but has gone to sea again. Heber is at Saybrook fishing. There has been quite a freshet during the past week, but it has nearly abated now. I expected Henry here last night, but he has not come yet, and if he does not come to-night - I don't know but I shall think he has gone South to fight. I shall not think so though, but I shall think it very strange. I will go and read a while now, then if he does not come I will retire for rest preparatory to going to knitting early in the morning.
Aug 3 Saturday 1861 It has been a long time since I have written any in my journal before and so I will write a few lines. Three weeks ago Thursday Ellen & I went to Chelsea Mass; we left home at 1/2 past 6 in the morning went to Lyme Ferry in a boat and remianed there till half past 12 then took the cars for Boston going through New London, Stonington & Providence. One week ago yesterday we left Chelsea for Thompsonville where we remained till last Thursday when we came home. It has been very warm during the past week and I hope it will be cooler next week. I have been ironing the most of the day and feel very tired so will close this days journal and retire for rest.
Fri Sep 13 Bell (Rathbus) died of quick consumption aged 21 years. I came to Lyme two week ago Wednesday and this morning received a line from Bell saying she should leave home next Monday night for New Britian Normal school, therefore I shall go home this afternoon to return again Monday night. I have been onto the beach 4 times since I came to Lyme and picked up a number of shells, which I have been making into frames.
Sep 29 Mrs Jane Luther died aged 24 years, she left a babe 5 months old.
Mon 30 I visited Eliza Williamses school in the afternoon.
