Fri Jan 1 1869 Snowed and hailed all day. Received this diary for a Christmas or New Year's present. Clear, good sleighing. 12:30 P.M. Henry & I left Hartford on the cars for home. Reached Lyme about 5 P.M. took dinner at the Tremont House in New Haven. Spent the night at Father Lord's.
Sun Jan 3 Very pleasant. Netty went home with us in the morning, found all well. Have been gone from Archie 5 weeks and find him changed some, looks quite well & happy. Evening took a ride to East Haddam & back.
Mon Jan 4 Foggy. Henry spent the day and night with us.
Tue Jan 5 Morning Henry left for Hartford. Another foggy day. Mild day for January.
Wed Jan 6 Clear, quite pleasant for the season.
Thur Jan 7 Pleasant. Mother went to Deep River.
Fri Jan 8 Very pleasant for the season. Mother came home from Deep River in the morning. Lewis went up on the river after her with (------------) and the sleigh.
Sat Jan 9 Pleasant as spring. Afternoon Archie and I called at Mr Wm Brockway's and saw Kate and the twins & Mrs Geo Tiffany and baby Georgie. Received a letter from Henry.
Sun Jan 10 Pleasant.
Mon Jan 11 Cloudy. Lewis went to Saybrook and back. John Elliott Ely died of consumption. He was 38 ys. & 8 months old.
Tue Jan 12 Cloudy. Cleared off before night.
Wed Jan 13 Pleasant. We washed. Richard Brockway here in the evening and we played cards.
Thur Jan 14 Very pleasant. Attended J. E. Ely's funeral with Mother, he was a Free Mason and buried under the Masonic Order. Received two letters from Henry. Mother went home wirth Aunt Emma.
Fri Jan 15 Cloudy, rained some.
Sat Jan 16 Growing cold. Archie & I came to East Haddam to make Ellen Mack a visit. Made a (tidy) this P.M.
Sun Jan 17 Cloudy most of the day. Afternoon Archie & I went out to Ellen Elys and called. Rev Moore of (Cl--tra-t) Village died at the Allyn House aged 55 years.
Mon Jan 18 Cloudy. Archie most sick with a cold.
Tue Jan 19 Pleasant.
Wed Jan 20 Cloudy most of the day. Loss & I rode to the Landing and Moodus. Received a letter from Henry, he went to Montreal, Ca last week with Mr Hastings and McDonald alias Stanley was arrested there.
Thur Jan 21 Attended a rug bee at Mrs Tracy's and went home with Ellen Ely at night. Growing cold. Received a letter from Henry.
Fri Jan 22 Cold. Went to Ellen Mack's at night and we went down to Mr Wm Smith's and spent the evening.
Sat Jan 23 Very cold. Went up to Mr Bennett's in the morning on an errand. Received a letter from Henry, is probably now in Montreal as he is expected to go there.
Sun Jan 24 Very pleasant. Archie & I came home. At night Mother & I called at Mr Shipper's, Mr Wm Brockway and Wm P Brockway's.
Mon Jan 25 Pleasant, we washed.
Tue Jan 26 Pleasant. Mother & I spent the evening at Mr Rosewell P LaPlaces.
Wed Jan 27 1869 A very pleasant day. Afternoon Archie and I went to Essex and spent the afternoon at Mr Eben Williamses. Received a letter from Henry was in Montreal when he wrote. Spent the P.M. at Nathan Reynolds'es.
Thur Jan 28 Wm Marvin & Ann (Nirkin) married.
Fri Jan 29 Pleasant. Mother went to Hamburgh. Loss, Ellen & Millie came down. Lewis went to East Haddam & Eddie came home with him.
Sat Jan 30 Rained during the night, pleasant to-day. Received a letter fron Henry, he arrived back to Hartford Wednesday.
Sun Jan 31 Snowed, some cold to-night.
Mon Feb 1 Cold & windy. Eddie went to East Haddam with Lewis.
Tue Feb 2 Cold. Received a letter fron Henry and one from Bell. Mr & Mrs Lodwick Shipper , Elezer, Richard & Ebenezer Brockway spent the evening here.
Wed Feb 3 Rained and snowed, heavy thunder here at 11:30 P.M. Capt. Wm Miner and Carrie Dible married at Hartford.
Thur Feb 4 Cleared off cold at night.
Sat Feb 6 Bell came home, came from Waterbury yesterday and Hartford today.
Sun Feb 7 Pleasant. Evening went up to Mr Shippee's and called. In the evening had (--------) some apples and cider.
Mon Feb 8 Pleasant. After washing, Mother went over to Aunt Mary Annšs.
Tue Feb 9 Cloudy, snowed some towards night. Adelaide LaPlace spent the afternoon & evening & night. Mother came home.
Wed Feb 10 Cloudy, rained little. Bell & I intended to have gone to Ellen Mack's to a rug bee, had it been pleasant. Addie went home in the morning.
Thur Feb 11 Cloudy. Received a letter from Henry, he writes he thinks he shall be home Saturday.
Fri Feb 12 Pleasant. Ice started from above here. Bell went up to Mr LaPlaces. Mother went up to (------) Reynond's. Bell LaPlace (Varier) sick.
Sat Feb 13 Pleasant. Archie and I went over to Oscar's and spent the day. Henry did not come . Very muddy traveling.
Sun Feb 14 Loss Mack came down and Bell went back with him.
Mon Feb 15 A very rainy day.
Tue Feb 16 Pleasant. Received a long letter from Henry.
Wed Feb 17 Pleasant morning, cloudy afternoon. Libbie came over to-night.
Thur Feb 18 Snowed some.
Fri Feb 19 Snowed some. Libbie went home between 3 & 4 P.M. during a snow squall.
Sat Feb 20 Cloudy, snowed some. Received two letters from Henry.
Sun Feb 21 Cloudy.
Mon Feb 22 Cloudy and foggy, rained a little.
Tue Feb 23 A very rainy day. Henry came home to-night, not very well.
Wed Feb 24 Clear and windy.
Thur Feb 25 Pleasant. Henry & Archie & I went to Hamburgh. Auction sale of part of Mr Morely Brockway's estate. Took dinner at the Brockway's. Loss & Ellen came home.
Fri Feb 26 Snowed all day.
Sat Feb 27 Windy & cold, good sleighing. Went to Hamburgh with Henry, he went from there to Hartford.
