The Civil War Letters of Henry Sill Lord

Introduction

Henry Sill Lord married Elizabeth Alice Ely January 22, 1862. In March of the same year, Henry left his bride of three months to journey to New Orleans, Louisiana in the company of the 13th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers. As to his capacity within this branch of the Union Army, it is hard to determine from the following letters written to his wife during the period from March to August. He may have been an enlisted man, he may not, although his work as Supply Clerk tends to imply he was there in a civilian capacity.

Whatever his official function, it was my intention that the decendents of Henry Sill Lord be able to share his hopes and frustrations, his impression of the sights that met him, and his longing for home and loved ones during one of the most devastating periods in the history of the United States.

May the Lord family enjoy reading these letters as much as I enjoyed putting them together.
