In the afternoon Oscar carried me down to the flat rock in a boat and I walked from there over to Uncle Wms. (Louisa) Ely is quite low with the consumption, she did not know me, and could not realize who I was. How strange it seemed to me! and how solemn to think that she is so soon to leave this world. There she lies and so still, she looks like a corpse now. She does not appear to notice any one, but gazes at the plastering above her head, and when spoken to answers sometimes very soon and sometimes the question has to be repeated several times before she notices it. Her voice sounds natural more so than anything else. I wish she knew me.
