December 1862

Mon Dec 1 Henry & I left Lyme at 1/2 past 3 o'clock P.M. and arrived home at 6.
Tue Dec 2 Henry went to Hamburgh.
Thur Dec 4 Henry went to Hamburgh, returned towards night. Mailed 6 letters. Lizzie Griffin died this [aged 18] morning at 1 o'clock. Capt.. (Huvey's) barn burned.
Fri Dec 5 Pleasant day. funeral of Lizzie Griffin at 1:30 at church in Hambugh. Pleasant morning, rained this evening. Heber came home at 8:30 P.M.
Sat Dec 6 Very windy. Sterling lowed up. Heber & Father went to Hamburgh, left their boat in the cove.
Sun Dec 7 Cold, two cow boats went down through the ice.
Mon Dec 8 Cold. The river froze up tight. We washed. Henry went to Hamburgh & back afternoon. I called at Annies. Spent part of the evening at Nells. She has a hard cold.
Tue Dec 9 Made Eddie a pair of pants. Mother made some calls in the afternoon. Miss Rathburn sick at Mr. R. J. LaPlace's. Evening Loss & Ellen came home.
Wed Dec 10 Pleasant. Afternoon Hebert & Ernest came home. Willie came after us & we came to Lyme. Loss & Ellen left at the same time they took Edna with them. Received a letter from Bell & Dexter.
Thur Dec 11 Pleasant. I sewed on Mary's dress.
Fri Dec 12 Another pleasant day. Henry (------------) wood in horse boat. I finished Mary's dress & commenced another.
Sat Dec 13 Pleasant. Finished Mary's dress. Ironed. Received a letter from Oscar & Capt.. Tinley.
Sun Dec 14 Went to church, afternoon Ed Denison preached. Evening Mr. & Mr. Lord & Sarah went to Dea. Comstock's. Dea is sick.
Mon Dec 15 Pleasant. Washed and sewed. Mother Lord made me a present of a (Marseilles) bed spread. A 3 son born to Mr. O Banning.
Tue Dec 16 Mr. Marcus Champion & Miss Angeline Champion called in the evening.
Wed Dec 17 Attended Society at Mr. Champion's. Sewed on a dress for Libbie. Mr. Chapman died on the wharf of heart disease. Thur Dec 18 1862 Sewed.
Fri Dec 19 Sarah & I took a ride. It is growing cold.
Sat Dec 20 A cold day. I sewed most of the time.
Sun Dec 21 Another cold day. Lizzie & Amy did not go to church.
Mon Dec 22 Afternoon Henry & I went home to spent the night.
Tue Dec 23 Morning came back to Lyme Ferry. Afternoon took a ride up town. Received a letter from Ellen an invitation to spend Christmas with her.
Wed Dec 24 Pleasant. Cut and sewed a dress for Henry's Mother. Finished off a hat for Santa Claus for Libbie. Sarah made some molasses candy.
Thur Dec 25 Christmas. Am homesick. A cloudy day. Could not go to East Haddam. Received a letter from Alice Blish. Spent the evening at Mr. Champions.
Fri Dec 26 Pleasant. finished off Libbies dress. Evening went down to the train.
Sat Dec 27 Pleasant. Morning took a ride to (Seuysville). Afternoon Henry, Lizzie & I went to Essex, called at Aunt Eliza's, Sally's & Mr. E.W. Pratt's.
Sun Dec 28 A pleasant day. Willie came home with Henry & I in the evening. Willis spent the night, muddy traveling.
Mon Dec 29 Pleasant. Washed. Father went to Essex
. Tue Dec 30 Forenoon ironed. Afternoon sewed some. Heber & Henry went to Hamburgh. Mother received a letter from Bell, she is in Hitchcocksville.
Wed Dec 31 Sewed all day. My 26 birth day. My birth day present a photograph album, I ironed some and practiced some on the piano-forte.

Fried Cakes 1 quart sifted flour - 1 table spoonful cream, 2 teaspoonfuls cream of tartar, 1 cup sugar, one egg, 1/2 teaspoonful soda, nutmeg and lemon if you wish, rubbed together and wet with milk.

Clove Cake 1 cup molasses l sugar l milk l butter 2 eggs 4 1/2 cups flour, tablespoonful ginger, nutmeg &c and l teaspoon soda.
