The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1855

January 1855


Mon Jan 1 Came in very pleasant a beautiful day and bright moon shiny night, a very little snow on the ground but not enough for sleighing here. There was no school so I stayed at home and helped Mother quilt, or Mother helped me. In the evening there was a party up at Caroline Warner 's. Heber, Oscar and I went and jovial time we had of it all the girls and fellows from this place were there and some from Hadlyme. I left before it broke up quite pleased with the New Year's party.
Tue Jan 2 Was another pleasant day. I started early for school. Mr Newel was sick and did not come into school as usual.
Wed Jan 3 Was a cloudy day. I went to school, at noon Leona Chapel and I called on Marion, she is at work at Mr Christopher Brockways.
Thu Jan 4 Another cloudy day. I went to school. Eliza Williams stopped to Mrs. Tiley's and spent the evening. Mr Young and Augustus Pratt were there.
Fri Jan 5 A pleasant day. I went to school wrote a composition on the New Year. Came home at night.
Sat Jan 6 A cloudy day. Mother went up to Mr. LaPlace's and spent the afternoon. There was 4 couple went from this place last night to Rope Ferry to a ball. They returned today. Mrs Hungerford moved to New London yesterday, Caroline LaPlace went with her.
Mon Jan 8 A pleasant day. I went down to school in the morning the crossing was very poor. I got into a boat and Father and Heber drawed me in it on the ice to where it as open and then rowed the rest of the way.
Tue. Jan 9 Was a cloudy day. I went to school, Mr. Newel came into the schoolroom, but was not able to hear any classes recite. Mr Abraham Denison came to Mrs T's to spend the week.
Wed Jan 10 Was a clear, cold day. I went to school. Mrs Martha Smith spent the afternoon at Mrs Tileys . She and Becky and I went to the Society in the evening, it was at Mrs Brewster's
Thu Jan 11 A cloudy day, snowed in the aftenoon, evening. Isabel Williams and I went to Philenda 's and spent the night.
Fri Jan 12 It was plasant overhead but very muddy walking. I came home at night. Leona came up with me. Turner Buckingham got us across the river in a boat.
Sat Jan 13 It was cloudy and foggy, and very muddy walking. In the morning I went to Hamburgh to Uncle Wms. at night I started for home, it rained so I stopped to Capt. Tooker's and spent the night.
Sun Jan 14 It was clear, but very cold. I came home from Capt. Tooker 's in the morning. At night I went down to Mrs T's. Leona went down also.
Mon Jan 15 It was cloudy most of the day , a snow squall in the morning. I went to school. Mr Newel came in. In the evening Mr Edwin Pratt, Miss Harriet Gates, Harriet Tucker and Frank Brockway were to Mrs Tiley's.
Tue Jan 16 It snowed most of the day. I went to school. There was a couple married in the Episcopal Church in the evening. Caroline Scoville was married to Mr John Rogers.
Wed Jan 17 Was a cloudy day. I went down to Mr Edward Pratt's after school.
Thu Jan 18 A rainy day. I went to school, went to Philenda'sfrom school, and to Mr Tucker's in the evening.
Fri Jan 19 A cloudy day, snowed some. I went to school, spent the night at Mrs Tiley's. I had a composition (on time).
Sat Jan 20 A pleasant day. I came home in the morning, went to spelling school in the evening. Ebenezer Brockway broke his wrist yesterday a playing at school. Dr. Babcock set it. I received a letter from Martha Kirkland.
Sun Jan 21 It was pleasant in the morning, but soon clouded up and in the afternoon it rained some at night, it slacked up and I went to singing school. Mr. Jennings is their teacher, it rained very hard when we came home. Charles Warner spent the night here.
Mon Jan 22 Was a very rainy day. I did not go to school, the first day I have missed. At night it cleared off so that I went down to Mrs Tiley's.
Tue Jan 23 A clear but cold day. I went to school had the toothache most all night.
Wed Jan 24 It was pleasant in the morning, but soon clouded up and at night it snowed.
Thu Jan 25 A pleasant day. I went to school at night the snow had settled a considerable. Mr Joseph Hayden died last night of the consumption, he was but 24 years old he caught his death cold at a ball.
Fri. Jan 26 It rained, and snowed and blowed, and on the whole was a very unpleasant day from school I went to Philenda's and spent the night.
Sat Jan 27 It was clear but the wind blew very hard, and the crossing was so bad that I did not go home. In the morning I called over to the Dentist's, he said I had some teeth that had ought to be filled but he could not fill them to day. In the afternoon Philenda and I went to the funeral, it was in the Congregational Church. There was a great number there. His friends came out, he was a member of that church, the Secetary.
Sun Jan 28 Was a cloudy day: in the morning I walked up in sight of the river it was full of ice, so I went back to Tiley's and went to a meeting in the afternoon.
Mon Jan 29 It was cloudy most of the day, pleasant at night. I went to school. Mrs Plumb's baby died last night and was buried to day, it was 6 weeks old.
Tue Jan 30 A pleasant day. I went to school it is the last day of the term. I intend to go another term. Rebecca made a little party in the evening. Eliza Williams, Cornelia Risley, Gilmer Post, Webster Buckingham, Albert Parker, and Augustus Pratt were invited and all came, we had a nice time.
Wed Jan 31 A pleasant day I went to school, and from school I went to Aunt Janies and took tea, and in the evening went to hear a lecture delivered by the Rev. John Filbrick on common schools in the Congregational Church, the lecture I went to Mrs Tiley's.
