January 1856

Tuesday, Jan 1 1856 It has been a very pleasant day, and the sleighing is fine. Harriet Tooker gave a party in the evening. I attended and enjoyed myself nicely.
Thu Jan 3 It has been cloudy most of the day. Heber's 21 birth day.
Wed. Jan 9 Very cold - said to be the coldest day that has been known here for 25 yrs.
Thu. Jan 10 Another cold day. Oscar went to Essex with a horse and sleigh, and Jennie Watrous come home with him - we attended the Society at Mrs Damons.
Fri Jan 11 Emma Warner spent the afternoon here.- We called up to Mrs LaPlaces.
Sun. Jan 13 Miss Cecelia Baley was married to Mr Henry Buckingham. Jennie went home yesterday.
Tue Jan 14/56 A pleasant day. A sleighing party went from here to Clinton. Jennie Watrous and I went with Heber. We left her about 2 o'clock P.M. and arrived in Clinton at 4. Took supper at 7 - danced till 3 the next morning then retired - took breakfast at 9 and some after left for home, we had gone but a short distance when we broke down. We stopped to repair then went on to Saybrook where we arrived about 2 called at the Fenwick house a short, then came home. Our party consisted of 4 in number, and all appeared to enjoy themselves very nicely.
Tue Jan 22 A pleasant day. Celia Brockway gave a party in the evening. Marion Chapel, Gilbert LaPlace and John Damon spent the evening here. I received a letter from Vici Hinman.
Tue Jan. 29 A cloudy day. Oscar left home to go to sea with Capt.. Hovey, in the ship Amargon.
Thu Jan 31 It is last day of Jan. 1856 and is a cloudy day we have had a very cold month with good sleighing every day. In the evening Heber, Ellen and I went up to Mr Miners. Mr Marvin is boarding there and Caroline invited in a few young people.
