Transcribed by Betsy Ross Averill

January 1958

Fri Jan 1 It has been a very pleasant day. I kept house for Aunt Emeline to go to Boston. I took my 21 music lesson which was the commencement of the "Woodland Waltz". I called at Mrs Washburn's in the evening.
Sun Jan 3 A pleasant day. In the forenoon Aunt Emeline and I went to Boston to meeting, MrSteve preached.
Mon Jan 4 I weighed 135 lbs.
Wed Jan 6 I received a letter from Ellen. She rote that Mr Joseph Selden's house was burned one night last week, and Dinah an old slave, who when Connecticut was made a free state would not take her freedom was burned to death. Mrs Pamela Mack is dead, and Lauristin Mack's widow is married again.
Sun Jan 10 There is some snow on the ground, and it is very good sleighing. It is a beautiful day. I have been to Boston to church with Miss Cragin she attends the Unitarian after meeting we took a walk up Tremont, Park and Beacon St.
Tue Jan 12 Received a letter from Father, and Mother. Aunt E and I spent the day at Dea. Hunts.
Wed Jan 13 In the evening I attended a surprise party in the vestry to the Baptist church given to Mr Mason their minister.
Sat Jan 16 I received a letter from Caroline LaPlace in which she informed me Harriet & Zebulon were married a week ago Monday.
Tue Jan 19 In the evening Aunt Emeline and I attended a surprise at Mr Newcombs in Boston, the surprise was give to their little boy Jimmy, there were about 40 children present.
Wed Jan 20 In the afternoon I called on Mrs Haines and we went over to Boston to attend a Sewing Society but changed our minds and returned to Chelsea and attended a Social Gathering in the evening in the vestry to the Baptist church. I had an invitation to a party in East Boston, but did not accept. I received a letter from Heber, they have not fished but three days and have caught but 26 shad, for they have passed a law there that no non-residents shall fish: the fine is from 2 to 3 months imprisonment and from one to two hundred dollars.
Thu Jan 25 In the morning I helped Aunt Emeline bake and at one o'clock we took James Lewis and the Commodore and went to East Boston and spent the afternoon at her Mothers. After we got to the hourly office to come home I bought an evening paper and found the arrival of the Berkshire in it, which made me very anxious to reach home. We arrived home about 6 in the evening and found Uncle Jacob but no Oscar, he does not know I am here. I shall see him tomorrow if nothing happens.
Fri. Jan 22 Oscar came over about half past 2 o'clock and was quite surprised to find me here. He is quite dark having been so long exposed to the salt-water but other -wise he looks quite natural. Uncle J made me a present of a fan.
Fri Jan 29 Oscar started for home. I went across the ferry with him and he will take the half past 5 o'clock train of cars for New London.
Sat Jan 30 In the morning Uncle J attended a Free mason meeting and was initiated.
