March - April 1865

Fri Mar 3 A very stormy day.
Sat Mar 4 Night Henry came home. Very stormy.
Sun Mar 5 Pleasant. Was dressed for the first time for 10 days. Feel pretty smart. Dr. Warren & wife , Mrs Brockway & Mrs O.A. Banning called.
Mon Mar 6 Pleasant. Henry left here at noon. Mrs Damon called.
Tue Mar 7 Evening a party at Mr (An------)
Wed Mar 8 Pleasant. Evening exhibition at the school house. Commenced to rain. Aunt Mary Ann came here from the exhibition.
Thu Mar 9 Very stormy. Received a letter from Henry.
Fri Mar 10 Rained some at night - snowed. Aunt Mary Ann went home.
Sat Mar 11 Mr Samuel Martin died aged 70 yrs. Ellen went home early in the morning. A 4 son born to Mrs Sarah Comstock.
Sun Mar 12 Ellen came home this morning. Dr. called. Harriet Warner called.
Mon Mar 13 Heber & Ellen went to her father's funeral.
Tue Mar 14 Argo sailed. Received a letter from Henry.
Thu Mar 16 1865 Baby weighed 8 lbs. 15 ozs.
Fri Mar 17 Received letter from Henry.
Sat Mar 18 Received letter & papers from Henry.
Sun Mar 19 Loss & Ellen spent the day. Freshet.
Wed Mar 22 Major used up three sugar titis in an alarmingly short time.
Thu Mar 23 Baby weighed 9 lbs. 9 ozs. Bell started for Hartford & Waterbury.
Sat Mar 25 Evening Henry came home, says the baby has grown amazingly.
Sun Mar 26 Pleasant. Went outdoors for the first time for over 4 weeks. Baby remarkably good because his father is home.
Mon Mar 27 Henry went to Essex and back, will go to Hartford on Steamer Sunshine to night. Mrs Banning & Mrs Rogers called.
Wed Mar 29 Aunt Rhoda & Lucy Ann Brockway spent the day here.
Sat April 1 Ellen Ely came home from East Haddam, also Lewis.
Mon April 3 Argo arrived. Evening Ernest taken sick.
Tue April 4 Ellen started for Hartford with Heber. Dr. Warren called to see Ernest. Called again in the night, with his brother. Oscar went to Hartford last night. I returned tonight.
Wed April 5 Ernest very sick with (Hernia)
Thu April 6 Loss and Ellen came down.
Fri April 7 3 Dr's here to see Ernest, but there is no help for him & he must leave us. Heber & wife arrived from Hartford at 11 o'clock P.M.
Sat April 8 1865 Ernest died at 10 m. to 4 A.M. His sufferings are ended. Henry & Lewis came home in the evening.
Sun April 9 Funeral at 3 P.M. in Hamburgh church, sermon by Mr (-----------) of Essex. Text 97th Psalm 2 v.
Mon April 10 Am most sick with a cold. A rainy day. Henry left for Hartford in the evening. News came that Leešs army has surrendered & great rejoicing.
Fri April 14 Am sick. Ellen came down at night. Evening President Lincoln shot and Secretary Seward assassinated. Heber & Ellen moved into the house with Mr T. Warner.
Sat. April 15 Dr. called to see me am some better. President died this morning about 7 o'clock. Seward died.
Sun April 16 Pleasant. Ellen went home at night.
Mon April 17 Am not any better.
Tue April 18 Received a letter from Henry, he was sick last week.
Wed April 19 President's funeral in Washington. Heber went to New London & back.
Thu April 20 Received a letter from Henry. My boil broke and I am better.
Fri April 21 Kate Brockway spent the afternoon here.
Sat April 22 News came of Ansel Ely's death, he was shot in battle. April 1, aged 22 years. Received two letters from Henry.
Sun April 23 Mr Wm. Brockway & wife & Dr. Warren called. Mother & Oscar went over to Aunt Mary Ann's & called.
Mon April 24 Sewed.
Wed April 26 Aunt Nabby spent the afternoon here.
Thu April 27 Bell attended the funeral of on of Mr Geo Danielses boys aged 9 years. Received two letters from Henry.
Fri April 28 Mrs L. Warner & Mrs. Tim Warner called. Evening Henry came home.
Sat April 29 Henry & I took a ride to East Haddam with the baby. He was intending to go back tonight, but it commenced to rain very hard so he postponed it.
Sun April 30 Morning Henry left for Hartford.
