October 1854

Sun Oct 1 A cloudy day there was several came on board the vessel, of our acquaintences, Capt. Hayden, Capt. (Gladwin), ( --------) Brockway, .i James Hall, Chas Harrison, Richard Brockway and Mr. Ezra (Lester). In the evening we went on board of Capt. Gladwin's vessel and made a short call, had an introduction to Mr. (Snow).
Mon Oct 2 A pleasant day, towards night Mr. (Snow) walked down to the Battery with Harriet and I. In the evening Harriet and I went to (Barnums) museum with Capt. Gladwin and (M----) Brockway.
Tue Oct 3 It has been a cloudy day rained a little about noon the tow boat J.D. (Secor) towed the Intent and Hudson out of Quinces slip into another, and the Intent hauled along side of a ship she was going to take salt out of to carry to Hartford. In the evening Harriet and I started to go to a circus with Mr. Snow & Joseph Hayden, they went with us where the circus used to be and went in and we found ourselves in a German opera, we got some handbills and it said on them "New Yorker(Stad) & Theater" and that was all we could read , we were a going to leave when a man told us we could understand it, so we stayed a while, but we couldn't understand a word, so we left with good (---------) to the circus.
Wed Oct 4 It was rainy in the forenoon and cloudy in the afternoon. They took what salt they intended to out of that ship and went to Brooklyn to take in more.
Thu Oct 5 They finished loading about 4 o'clock and hauled out into the stream.
Fri Oct 6 A pleasant day, we started in the morning and went up as far as the Gate and lay until afternoon, then started again. The Hudson passed us in the afternoon when she passed us Capt. Gladens little boy Chas. swung his hat up at us and by and by overboard it went and he lost it for good. When H and I retired we were off the Huntington Light.
Sat. Oct 7
In the morning rose and where should we be but in New London. The wind blew so hard they put in there for a harbor as the tide was not right to come over the bar. We lay all day and night in New London.
Sun Oct 8 They started with the vessel before day light, it was a warm day, there was scarcely a breath of wind on the sound and they had to row a part of the way, we came over the bar about 12 and arrived at the mouth of Hamburgh cove about 2. Father was there to meet me, when I arrived home I found the baby had been sick but was better. Mother was most sick.
Mon Oct 9 A pleasant day. I helped Mother wash.
Thu Oct 12 A cloudy day. To night there was a hunt supper up to Mr. Erastus (Seays) no one went from here except Oscar. Ellen went up to Celias to spend the night and next day. I finished working my undersleeves.
Fri Oct 13 A cloudy day, rained some in the morning. we quilted a comforter. Heber came home the vessel is bound to (Troy).
Sat Oct 14 A cloudy day, commenced to rain in the afternoon and rained all the evening. Mrs. Taylor and Marion Chapel and Caroline Miner called here. Mrs. T and husband and Marion and Mr. Frank Davis took the boat for Middletown. Caroline Miner and I sent a boquet to E. Banning and I sent one to Capt. Brown.
Mon Oct 16 A pleasant day cool in the evening cloudy at night. I helped Mother wash after washing I called over to Capt.Tooker's to see Harriet but she was not at home. Mr. Edward Gates was published yesterday to Maria Day.
Tue Oct 17 Cloudy most of the day sprinkled a little in the afternoon and there was a rainbow. Father took a tow up to Haddam by the Portland in the morning and came home about 4 o'clock P.M. he brought home some apples. In the forenoon I called down to Mr. Haydens to see Harriet Tooker. She was at work there. In the afternoon Mother and Louie went over to Mrs. Posts.
Wed Oct 18 Was a cloudy day cold the night before. Harriet T came here in the afternoon to make Ernest a jacket.
Thu Oct 19 A pleasant day. Mrs. Davis and Samantha called here. They went on board the Island Belle to go home to Long Island. Emma Warner called here she went over to Mrs. Harrison's to spend the afternoon, when she went home Harriet and I went up to as far as the school house with her and I lost my pin that Aunt Mary Ann made me a present of. They are repairing the school house.
Fri Oct 20 Was a pleasant day. I sewed. Mother , Ellen and Oscar went over to Hamburgh this afternoon Mother bought Ellen, Isabel, and I a new calico dress.
Mon Oct 23 A pleasant day. In the forenoon we washed, in the afternoon I ironed some towards night I called up at Emma Miners.
Tue Oct 24 Another Pleasant day we cleaned parlor.
Wed Oct 25 A pleasant day, Mrs. Tiley and Emily spent the day here, Emily cut my dress. Mrs. Louisa Post spent the afternoon here.
Thu Oct 26 A pleasant day, sewed on my dress, finished off a pair of socks for the baby in the eve.
Fri Oct 27 A pleasant day. In the morning Father and Mother went to Essex Father bought a new stove, the Roger Williams.
Sat Oct 28 A pleasant day, but cloudy at night. In the morning Isabel and I went over to Hamburgh: I spent the forenoon at (------------) Brockways. Isabel went to Aunt Rhodas. Afternoon we came to the P.O. and then came home. Mrs. (-are) Baldwin died a week ago last Sunday in a fit of apoplexy. Dr. Noyse was buried today in Lyme.
Tue Oct 31 A cloudy day, rained some in the evening. I finished my (merino) dress and cut a calico one for Isabel my first trial at dressmaking.
