Notes

Notes from Obiturary articles:

_alarming illness of Mr. Richard Joslyn, ex-paymaster of the First Regiment, C.N.G. Our notice on Saturday was the first intimation that anyone, except a very few intimate friends of the gentleman, had of his sickness, and , consequently, when later on Saturday evening his death was announced it caused a considerable and unusual feeling of surprise and sadness. Mr. Joslyn was in the city on Tuesday the 25th of February for the last time. That evening he complained of feeling ill, and said he had a severe pain in his left side and arm. He went home suffering consideralbly, but did not suppose anything serious was the matter. His arm shortly became almost useless, and it is probable it was paralyzed. He remained around his house until last Thursday, when he rapidly sank into unconsciousness, from which state he did not rally, and at 4:30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon death removed him from all wordly pain and suffering. Mr. Joslyn was fifty-three years of age. For many years he was engaged in the sash and blind manufactruing business, part of the time in South Manchester, where he lived and part of the time on the corner of Temple and MArket streets. He was a whole-souled man, generous to a fault, a lovin ghusband, an indulgent father,a steadfast friend. Always full of life, wit and humor, he was the centre of a circle of kindred spirits, and his loss will be deeply felt, not only by them, but by his hosts of friends. Mr. Joslyn has left a wife, one son and five daughters. The eldest daughter and son are married, the former living in Binghamton (NY). His children were all present in his last hours, as was also a brother from New York. The deceased gentleman had an insurance of $5,000 upon his life, in the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company of this city. During his life Mr. Joslyn suffered many pecuniary losses, but struggled through them all, and to a friend he recently remarked: "When I am dead and gone I would rather have ot said that I did not owe a man a dollar, than that I left my family $100,000 dishonestly obtained." His funeral took place in South Manchester, etc.

Facts gleaned from various newspaper articles at the time of his death:

Honorary member of Putnam Phalanx Member of Hartford Fishing Club formed in 1867 apparently a member of Knights of PYthias Member of East Hartford Bridge Commission
