The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1855

April 1855


Sun Apr 1 It was cloudy most of the day wind a little early in the morning.
Mon Apr 2 The wind blew very hard and it was quite cold. I went across the river in the morning. Mr (Chilenden) went over at the same time. Father, Heber, and Charles Harrison went over with us, they were on their way to Hamburgh to attend town meeting. The boat was a large one and the sail small and reefed, but we went very fast, the water came into the boat some and froze as fast as it came in. On my way home from school, I stopped to Mrs watrous and bade Jane good bye as she was a going to Deep River that night, she is going to learn the Milliners trade of Mrs Russel. Last Sunday night a vesel went onto the bar at the mouth of the river and sank. The Pilot Capt. Churchill of ³Portland² froze to death in the rigging, one boy was washed overboard & drowned, three men were taken ashore senseless and the last report was that one of the men had died after having both feet taken off.
Wed Apr 4 A pleasant day. I went to school. One of Capt. Wm Smith's daughters died (Ann Maria Croflin) last night at 11 o'clock of the consumption, aged 25. At 5 P.M. Mr Girdeon Smith died aged 75. Towards night Maria Watrous and I called up to Mrs Andrews'es.
Thu 5 It was cloudy in the morning, and in the afternoon it rained a little. I came home from school - came across the river with Mr Andrews.
Fri Apr 6 It was cloudy in the morning, but pleasant in the afternoon. It was Fast Day so there was no school. I commenced to work me a handkercheif and commenced some work for Ellen and Isabel.
Sun Apr. 7 1855 A pleasant day, the baby was not very well. The Dr. was over to Mr Damons so they called him in here.
Mon Apr 8 It was pleasant in the morning in the afternoon it rained. I went to school, at night went to Philenda's. Pratt Morgan was there in the evening. He brought Philenda and I lots of candies.
Tue. Apr 10 It was cloudy most of the day at night it rained quite hard. Mr Stone was married in the evening in the Episcopal Church. I intended to have gone, but the storm prevented me. I spent the evening at Eliza Emily Williamses. Emma Warner & Elizabeth Williams were at Eliza Wmses and they went over also. We had a grand time especially going home through the mud.
Wed Apr 11 It was cloudy most of the day, snowed a little towards night. I went to school and to Capt. Champlin's in the evening to the Society. There was quite a number there.
Thu Apr 12 It was clear but the wind blew quite hard. Emma Warner went to school with me and spent the day. In the evening Emma, Eliza and Elizabeth Wms and I called up to Mrs Andrewses.
Fri Apr 13 A pleasant day. I came home at night - Emma W came up to Elizabeth Williams went home with her, Jane Pratt came home with me.
Mon Apr 14 A pleasant day. I went to school in the afternoon examination commenced, at night Mrs Jane Brockway and I called up to Eliza Williamses. Miss Penfield, the Meadowwoods teacher was boarding here, her school commenced today.
Tue Apr 17 Examination day again and the last day of school for me. It was cloudy some. Celia Pratt came home with me from school. I had a perfect card through the term. and Edgar Stevens came home last Sunday, they have been shipwrecked. They were 4 days out of N.Y. when they were shipwrecked, 3 men and one woman were drowned the others got onto the wreck and were there 7 days when they were taken off not having anything to eat, but one rat which they cut into 18 pieces, but 3 of the men would not eat any they could not have survived much longer if they had not received aid, as they were most gone.
Wed Apr 15 A pleasant day, thundered some in the afternoon. I received a letter from Maria Watrous.
Thu Apr 19 Another pleasant day: Mother finished Father's sail. Isewed on the jib. Celia went home at night, Ellen went home with her.
Sat Apr. 21 A pleasant day, there was some freshet in the river. Mother, Father and Lewis went to Hamburgh. Heber came home at night with the toothache. He made Mother a presesnt of a book "Friendship's Gift"' Ellen came home at night she brought me a letter from Philenda. Mrs Watrous is quite sick wtih the bilious fever.
Sun Apr 22 Was a cloudy day. The freshet was quite high. I wrote a letter to Maria Watrous, in the evening went to singing school.
Mon Apr 23 Was a pleasant day. In the morning Aunt Jane Pratt died. She was 81 years old.
Tue Apr 24 a pleasant day: clouded up a little at night. In the morning Father and Oscar went down the river to fish. I helped Mother wash.
Wed Apr 25 A pleasant day, rained towards night a little. Mother went down to Aunt Jane's funeral which was attended at 2 o'clock P.M. Mr Gallup performed the services. Miss C Lord a lady from the west died last night at the residence of her Uncle James Lord in Essex of the lung fever. Aunt Jane had the lung fever also. Geo. Washington Otis died this morning, aged 26, he leaves wife and two children. Ellen went over to Mrs Smith's to the Society. In the morning I wrote a letter to Abby Fuller.
Fri Apr 27 A pleasant day. Ellen went over to Aunt Emma's and spent the day. Isabel went over to Angenette Tooker's and spent the afternoon and Angenette came home with her to spend the night. Mother and I cleaned house some.
Mon Apr 30 A cloudy day. Our school commenced Eliza Williams teaches it.
