Tue Apr 1 Still crossing on the ice, it has broken below the ferry. Many people came and crossed on the ice, to have it said that they crossed on it the 1 of Apr. an occurrance which I never knew happen before.
Wed Apr 2 Pleasant. Crossing on the ice about noon the ice broke away here, and towards night Capt.. John Tiffany came to the wharf with his vessel.
Thu Apr 3 The river open here. Some ice running.
Sat Apr 5 I crossed the river in a boat and went to Essex and was examined to teach school in Meadowwoods. Mr Gallup and Mr Stone examined me and gave me a certificate.
Mon Apr 14 I commenced my school with 17 pupils. How strange it seemed to me to teach. I hardly knew how to commence, it was a long time before I could make up my mind to the the school to order and begin my difficult of teaching the young idea of how to (shoot) for 20 long wks., at last, I said it was time to commence school, and the pupils might take their seats, they took their seats in haste and all was as quiet as need be, - there I sat behind my desk, with 17 children all staring me in the face, for I was a new teacher to them, and I knew they were all wondering whether they should like me or not, whether I could be cross or pleasant, strict or easy, but I could not go on with my school with such cugitations, so I turned my thoughts to the bible, told my first class where to commence &c.Thus my school commenced and once commenced my task did not look so hard and I passed the day very pleasantly and was not sorry I had so long a task to perform. I spent the night at Mrs Watrouses, my sleep was disturbed by long dream of my school, sometimes my dreams would be pleasant and then again full of trouble and I would awake to find it all a dream. I was glad when morning came and at 9 o'clock was in my school again, with one new scholar, I passed Tuesday still more pleasantly than Monday, and at night I went to Mrs Asa Williams to board, she sends one scholar to me Angenette she is 17 years of age, a lively girl, a good scholar, but I fear she will be a little troublesome for she is of rather an uneasy disposition and quite independent. However, I shall try to keep the right side of her. I am to board around and my first boarding place happens to be there. Mrs Williams is a woman of small stature very interesting looking and I think a very nice woman.
Tue Apr 15 A stormy day, and I was therefore prevented from going to Meadowwoods.
