The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1860

Transcribed by Betsy Ross Averill

April 1860

Sun Apr 1 I went over to Mr Buckinghams about 9 A.M. and took a last look at the remains of Elbert. There was a prayer at the house, then they proceeded to the church where there was to be a sermon preached. I returned home from the house as it seemed to far for me to walk to Essex & back in one day. In the afternoon and evening I attended a lecture delivered by Mr Underwood of R.I. in the school house. Henry escorted me home from the evening lecture, & invited me to attend a ball with him in Deep River next Tuesday night.
Mon Apr. 2 Town Meeting & washing day. The Republicans of this town defeated the Democrats by a majority of about 40. Towards night I made some calls up in the street and invited some of the girls to come and help me quilt Thursday afternoon.
Tue Apr 3 Ellen & I went to ball in the evening to Deep River. There were 11 of us went up from here in a boat. I went with H.S. Lord.
Thu 5 There were but 4 came in the afternoon to quilt, but there were quite a number in the evening. The bed-quilt was one that Joseph Warner gave me and he was here with several there from his place. Henry was here and stopped after the rest left. Oscar came home on the boat to-night. Ebenezer Brockway spent the night with him.
Fri 6 I quilted all day.
Sat 7 Finished off my quilt about 11 this forenoon & this afternoon went up to Mrs Warner's and helped finish off a quilt for the Society, one which they intended to present to Mr Henry H. Brownell of East Hartford, for presenting books to the Society .
Sun 8 Martha Lewis was maried to a gentleman from Rockville.
Wed 11 I attended the Union Society at Mrs Henry LaPlace's a very pleasant Society.
Thu Apr 12 In the morning I started to walk to Hamburgh, overtook a cart and rode over to the store in it. Called at the store, to Uncle Calvin's, Munroe Brockway's, then went to Uncle Wms. Pitt came home at night. Henry Lord came down in the evening and the result of our evening's conversation was an engagement for life, may I never regret the step I have taken. I think I never shall. We have kept company some time, and as far as I am acquainted with him I think we would live happily together.
Fri 13 Henry called again the evening, how near he seems to me now!
Sat 14. I was intending to go home, but the weather being unpleasant & cold I have concluded to remain here another night. Mr Thaddeus Raymond died this morning or last night and is to be buried on Monday. He leaves a wife and three small children, he was a worthy townsman and will probably be missed much in his community.
Sun 15 Henry called on his way home in the morning and said he would come home with me at night. So about 6 he came with his brother Dexter and brought me home, where we arrived about 8, Dexter went directly home. Henry came in.
Mon 16 Mr Thaddeus Raymond was buried. His funeral was attended at 2 o'clock P.M. at which time it rained quite hard and continued to rain through the afternoon.
Tue 17 In the afternoon Ellen & I went to Essex in a boat with Ebenezer Brockway. We went to the Dentists and Ellen had 4 teeth filled then went home and I spent the night at Philenda's.
Wed 18 Philenda & I went down to Mr Edward Pratt's and spent the day. Celia has been sick with the Scarlet fever, but is better now. Mr Gallup called at Mr Pratts while we were there.
Thu 19 In the afternoon Philenda & I went down to Mr Pratt's again. In the evening we went to meeting. Mr Gallup preached.
Fri 20 I went down to Mrs Marcus Beebe's. Charlie came down there in a boat so I came home with him in the afternoon.
Sat 21 I sewed the most of the day.
Sun 22 Lauristin Mack and John Damon spent the evening here. I received news that the teachers Institute is to meet in East Haddam this week.
Mon 23 In the afternoon I called to Celia Brockway's and we made preparations for going to the Institute.
Tue 24 Celia & I started in the morning about 9 o'clock in a boat with Ebenezer for East Haddam the wind blew quite hard and was ahead as also was the tide & we did not reach the Champion House till 15 m to 1 P.M.. We ordered a room there and arranged our toilett, then proceeded to school-house where the Institute was being held. Mr Northend made some remarks & Dr. Cummings lectured in Chemistry, which was more instructive I should say to men of Agriculture than to teachers. After the afternoon Session closed Celia & I were directed to Mr Geo W Jones as our boarding place assigned us during the Institute. We found our boarding place a very pleasant one and made ourselves at home. After tea we took a walk down to the stores then on to the wharf the Granite came along and we stepped on board and went to the next landing. Dunham Brown took us into his office then into the saloon to see the new piano then we went down & by that time were to the next landing. Dr. Cummings of New Britian lectured in the evening in the Champion Hall.
Wed 25 The morning session was opened with prayer by Prof. Northrop. Remarks by Prof. Northend on Pronunciation , Arithmetic & Writing. By Prof. Northrop on Reading and the origin of words. Williams made a few remarks and presented each teacher a testament some (track) &c. At 1/2 past 2 Miss Miss Mary Lord and Louise Rathborn marched to the (stall) & were addressed by Gen. Wms, Prof Nortend, Mr Hillard, Mr Phillips & Mr Rubino from the Institute which closed about 4 we went to the lower landing to witness a launch but were too late. In the evening Dr. Coleman lectured he took his subject from the Bible, a part of the 6 chapt. Deut. & 78 Psalm.
Fri 27 Remarks by Prof. Northend, Northrop and some others. Closing lecture by Prof. Northrop with Remarks from Mr Hillard, Rubino & Pratt. We were also very much favored with some music from some East Haddam people. Closed by singing the Doxology. After the lecture closed Celia & I went home. Lauristen & Addie Mack came and spent the night, Joe Warner went home with Addie
Sat 28 Afternoon (Adelie), Celia, llen Martin & I took a walk to Sheep skin hollow where (Loss) was at work. Loss plowed up a rabits nest with three young rabits two of which he came to me & the other to Celia. We rode back in a cart. In the evening Loss brought us home. Loss left here about 10 and at half past Henry called. I found a letter here from Mrs Lee.
