The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1870
Fri April 1 Cloudy, wind North east. Henry went to Essex & Hamburgh, has bought 1/3 of the Shippee farm.
Sat April 2 Cloudy. J. Barbour spoke at a political meeting in Hamburgh. Henry went to Lyme with him, rained, so he spent the night. Mother came home from East Haddam.
Sun April 3 Rainy. Henry arrived home about 4 P.M.
Mon April 4 A rainy day. State election, Town went Republican. Dea Parker & (Aihn---) elected Represenatives.
Tue April 5 Cloudy, rained in the afternoon. Willie Lord spent part of the day here. Henry went to Hartford on Silver Star.
Wed April 6 Cloudy, rained some.
Thur April 7 Pleasant. Received a letter from Henry. Loss & family spent the day here. Uncle Calvin, Aunt Orice & Walter called. Helped Bell dressmake.
Fri April 8 Pleasant.
Sat April 9 Pleasant. P.M. Mother, Archie & I walked to Deep River to Uncle Jacob's, came home on the boat. Received a letter from Henry.
Sun April 10 Pleasant. Oscar & Nett came up.
Mon April 11 A rainy day.
Tue April 12 1870 Windy, freshet rising. Bell went to Hamburgh & back.
Wed April 13 Pleasant, freshet rising. Bell, Archie and I came to Hartford. Bell returned. Took a ride in Mr Rood's new coach.
Thur April 14 Pleasant. Went to the die works and got a black Alpacca dress I had been having died and commenced to make it over.
Fri April 15 Pleasant.
Sat April 16 Pleasant, high freshet.
Sun April 17 Easter Sunday, cloudy. Henry, Archie & I went to Christ Church in the morning.
Mon April 18 A very rainy day.
Tue April 19 Cleared off pleasant. Bell came up and we went shopping all day.
Wed April 20 Pleasant most of the day, a few light showers. At 4 P.M. Bell, Archie and I left Hartford for Waterbury where we arrived at Mrs Burnett's about 6 o'clock P.M.
Thur April 21 Showery, took a walk down town to-night. Played (Berigalelle) & dominoes this evening.
Fri April 22 Left Waterbury for Hartford at 8 o'clock, arrived at about 10 A.M.
Sat April 23 Pleasant. Archie & I went to walk morning & afternoon.
Sun April 24 Very pleasant. Archie & I went to church in the morning to the South Church, heard the Rev. Mr Parker preach. Evening I went over to the Allyn House & called on Mrs Lee.
Mon April 25 Rainy morning, pleasant afternoon. Called on Mrs Miner.
Tue April 26 Pleasant. Georgie Ely called, brought a letter from his Mother. Packed to go home.
Wed April 27 Pleasant. Bell came up from Waterbury, we went shopping.
Thur April 28 Pleasant day. Thunder showers in the evening. Bell, Archie & I came home on The Silver Star. Mrs Ely spent the day with us.
Fri April 29 Loss & Ellen went home. Cloudy, some showers during the afternoon. Nett came from East Haddam in the evening where she is teaching school.
Sat April 30 Pleasant. Oscar came up from Saybrook.
