April 1871

Sat April 1 Pleasant morning, cloudy afternoon. Snowed & rained in the evening. Mother came down this evening on Silver Star. Dr. called.

Sun April 2 Considerable snow on the ground in the morning. cloudy most of the day. Willie & Libbie went home in the morning. Amelia William's & Mary called to-night.

Mon April 3 Pleasant. Mother washed. State election.

Tue April 4 Showery during the forenoon, afternoon pleasant. Dr. Grannis called, am about the same, he wished us to call another physician. Henry went home with Mother & Belle returned home wtih him. Have decided to call the baby Belle Ely.

Wed April 5 Cold & very windy. Dr. Hubbard of Essex called with Dr. Grannis this P.M. Dr. Hubbard thought I would get along without being worse, that my breast would not break, unless just a superficial discharge.

Thur April 6 Pleasant. Dr. Grannis called & strapped up my breast with (Dracalum) salve plaster. Am gaining all the time.

Fri April 7 Good Friday. Henry & Archie took a ride to Centerbrook & back. Belle 2 months old and only weighs 11 1/2 lbs. Mrs Williams and Amelia called.

Sat April 8 Very pleasant. Dr. Grannis called, am quite smart today. Went out doors for the first time in two months & helped considerable about the house. Belle called over to Mrs Williams. She went to meeting in the evening. I got supper.

Sun April 9 1871 Cloudy & foggy some. Henry went home with Belle & Edna returned with him.

Mon April 10 Very pleasant. Dr. Grannis called, lanced my breast, found matter, and I am very much better. Took a walk round the yard & a ride round the square.

Tue April 11 Cloudy. Father Lord called.

Wed April 12 Very pleasant. Dr. Grannis called. Edna washed some & I helped her little. Henry left home for Hartford to-night.

Thur April 13 Cloudy, April showers. Edna & I made some pound cake & loaf cake.

Fri April 14 Pleasant. Edna washed some & made some pies. P.M. I called over to Mrs Dickinson's & Mrs Williamses. Henry came home from Hartford on State of New York.

Sat April 15 Pleasant. Henry went home & to East Haddam with Edna, she commences school there next Monday. He came home on the Star and left Jimmie the horse at home at Loss'. Dr. Grannis called.

Sun April 16 Pleasant. Amelia & Lizzie Williams called to-night.

Mon April 17 Pleasant. Father & Mother Lord were here to 4 o'clock dinner. Mr Wright called in the evening.

Tue April 18 Pleasant. P.M. Mrs Edgar Dickinson called.

Wed April 19 Showery. Amelia, Bell & Mary Williams called. Mr Starkey, Mr Trip & Uncle Silvester Slate spent the evening here. Dr. Grannis called, his last visit.

Thur April 20 Pleasant.

Fri April 21 Pleasant till the middle of the afternoon when it fogged up suddenly & there was a thunder shower after a little while.

Sat April 22 Cloudy most of the time. Father Lord & Billy helped us pack to move. Mr Arnold brought Archie, the baby & I home. Henry & Billy came afterward. Am intending to board with Mother this summer.

Sun April 23 Clear. Wind blew hard. Loss & Ellen & Frank came down. Willie went home.

Mon April 24 Clear, wind blew down the river. Henry went to Saybrook & Mother rode far as Essex with him & spent the day. Archie commenced to go to school. Ida LaPlace teaches.

Tue April 25 Pleasant. Henry & Willie came up with our household goods on a scow. Miss Reynolds died suddenly.

Wed April 26 Pleasant, we washed. Belle came home this evening on the Silver Star from Waterbury. Willie went down with the scow.

Thur April 27 Cloudy. Rained little. Henry & Belle went to Hamburgh, Henry returned.

Fri April 28 Showery. Rained hard all night. Belle came home to-night. Edna came home on the Star.

Sat April 29 Cloudy morning, pleasant the rest of the day. Belle went to Hartford & back on the Star. Antionette Bassett came home wtih her, she is going to Moodus to board with Belle for a few weeks & attend school with her. Mother & I made some election cake and regulated some. I finished off a suit for Archie.

Sun April 30 Pleasant. Mr Rich "held forth" at the school house to-night. Edna, Nettie & Ed went. Mrs Zebulon Warner called with her baby, Mary Bell.
