May 1871

Tue May 2 1871 Pleasant. We ironed.

Wed May 3 Election, don't know who is Governor. Showery. Ellen & Frankie came down. Aunt Emma came over.

Thur May 4 A rainy day. Aunt Emma & Ellen could not go home. Nett & Jennie Brockway stopped here from the Star to spend the night.

Fri May 5 Rainy. Aunt Emma, Nett & Jennie went home to-night. Henry went to 5Hamburgh. Aunt Emma & Jennie rode over with him. Nett went over with Carlos & a boat load from there. Received a letter from Belle & Archie.

Sat May 6 Cloudy, some showers, rained hard all night. Ellen went home in the morning and Mother went with her.

Sun May 7 Cloudy. Most of the day wind blew down the river & a freshet. Loss came home with Mother. Belle three months old and weighs 12 lbs. 15 ozs.

Mon May 8 Pleasant. We washed. Freshet about the same.

Tue May 9 Pleasant morning. Cloudy rest of the day. Henry went to Hamburgh to go from there to Lyme & perhaps to N.Y. before he returns. Freshet falling. Evening Eddie has gone to the Good Templars lodge, Hamburgh. Mother & I are alone & it seems lonesome.

Wed May 10 Pleasant. Mother went to Hartford & back on the Silver Star. I kept house.

Thur May 11 Pleasant most of the day. Mother & I cleaned & papered the kitchen. Am not feeling very well to-night.

Fri May 12 Rather cool for the season. Belle, Edna, Archie & Nettie Basset came on the Silver Star. Mr Hamilton, a waterbury gentleman, came with them. He is visiting Belle. Mrs Elizabeth Warner Howard a second son born, it weighed 12 1/2 lbs.

Sat May 13 Pleasant. Henry came home to-night on the Star. He has been to Norwalk, New York & Hartford. Mrs Elihu Geer died in Hadlyme, aged 41 years.

Sun May 14 Pleasant. Rather cool. Henry, Archie and I took a walk down to the new Oakum dock that is partly built below Mrs Damon's. Edna went to a meeting at the school house & Lizzie Bebee came home with her to spend the night and go to Hartford on the Star in the morning to see Barnams show.

Mon May 15 Pleasant. Mrs Hamilton, Belle, Antionette Bassett, Edna & Lizzie Beebe took the boat from here in the morning. We washed. Henry worked in the garden setting bean poles &c.

Tue May 16 Pleasant. Henry went to Hartford. Mother & I ironed.

Wed May 17 Pleasant. Mother went to Essex to visit Aunt Eliza, Polly & Sally. Henry came home to-night. Mr Bates is not going to take the New Hotel in Saybrook.

Thur May 18 Pleasant. Mother came home to-night.

Fri May 19 Pleasant. Mother went up and called on Mrs Harvey Hall, she has a baby, Marion, about two weeks older than Belle & is is quite sick herself. Dr. Hubbard of Essex is visiting there. Belle came home this evening on the Star.

Sat May 20 Pleasant. Belle went to Hartford & back on the Silver Star. Mr Hamilton came home with her. Henry & Archie went to Essex.

Sun May 21 Pleasant.

Mon May 22 Foggy morning, cloudy most of the day. Belle went back to Moodus & Mr Hamilton to Waterbury. Mother & I cut a brown linen dress for Belle.

Tue May 23 Pleasant. Thunder showers during last night. Lightening killed two sheep. Henry went to Hartford & back on Silver Star. Eddie went to Hamburgh this evening andcame home with a white horse which Henry changed Nellie for. Nett came here to-night to go to Hartford in the morning after millinery goods. Mother & I ironed.

Wed May 24 1871 Pleasant. Mother went to Hartford & back with Nett & Mr Fox. Henry went to East Haddam & Hamburgh, the latter place first.

Thur May 25 Pleasant. Henry & Mother set out some plants they got in Hartford & Henry commenced to paint the house.

Fri May 26 Pleasant, quite warm. Belle came home to-night & Antionette Bassett came with her. Thunder shower to-night.

Sat May 27 Warm morning. Cloudy afternoon. Windy and cold to-night. Helped Belle sew.

Sun May 28 Pleasant. Towards night Henry & I took a walk onto the hill & back.

Mon May 29 Warm. We washed.

Tue May 30 A very warm day. Mother & I ironed the most of the clothes. Henry went to Hamburgh and back.

Wed May 31 A warm day & showery. Mother went to East Haddam on Silver Star. Henry went to Hartford & back.
