August 1862

Fri Aug 1 Went over to Mrs.. Landers'es sewed.
Sat Aug 2 8 of our family, I included went on a clam bake, called at Lyme Ferry on our way up. Left home at 1/2 past 6 A.M. arrive home at 2 min past 3 P.M. Towards night I called at Nett's, she is home.
Sun Aug 3 A warm day. Bell came home at night, her school closed yesterday.
Mon Aug 4 We washed. Forenoon picked 2 qts. whortleberries. Afternoon made a bed tick, first feather bed. Town meeting in Hamburgh to raise funds for volunteers. $150 dollars voted for each volunteer.
Tue Aug 5 Morning ironed, after which went over to Deep River to the Milliners and to meet some ladies at the boat. Miss Allison & Miss Steele, they came, arrived home about 2 o'clock P.M. Received a letter from Henry. Made a sheet.
Wed Aug 6 Made a blue silk hat all but the trimming.
Thur Aug 7 10 of us went to Saybrook, left home at 1/2 past 10 o'clock A.M. reached home again at 10 P.M. Stopped in Essex and got some ice cream, have supper in Burnham's Woods.
Fri Aug 8 Finished off my blue silk hat & partly bound comfortable. Spent the evening at Nell's.
Sat Aug 9 Finished binding my bed-quilt. After tea, Mother & I went a whortleberrying & picked 2 qts. & 1 pint, came up a shower & we came home.
Sun Aug 10 Pleasant. Called at Nell's. Mr. & Mrs.. (---------) there from Norwich. (Sihon) Chapman arrived from the schooner Uncle (----).
Mon Aug 11 Washed. Went a whortleberrying. Miss Allison & Miss Steele left. Bell left to make a visit at Miss Allison's. Afternoon called at Leora's, Nell's & Celia's.
Tue Aug 12 Went over to Mrs.. Landres'es and sewed. Mother spent the afternoon here. Received a letter from Henry dated Jul 23. A thunder shower in the afternoon. Mrs.. Mack's house struck by lightning.
Wed Aug 13 Morning Mother & I went a whortleberrying, picked 7 qts. Altered over my blue morning dresss sleeves. Called at Mrs. Brockway's.
Thu Aug 14 Went to Hadlyme. Took dinner at Mrs.. Harrison's and tea at Mrs.. H. Gateses. Received a letter from Henry. Sihon Chapman's remains found.
Fri Aug 15 Rained morning. Afternoon I spent at Mrs.. Matilda LaPlaces. A daughter born to Mrs.. Fannie Jonson Morgan.
Sat Aug 16 Mrs.. Joseph Hayden of Essex died. Mrs.. Post spent forenoon here. Mother went with her to Mrs.. Phelps in afternoon. Made Ernest a pair of pants. Went a whortleberring alone, picked 2 qts, l pint.
Sun Aug 17 Afternoon attended lecture at the school house by Miss Beckwith.
Mon Aug 18 Washed. Ellen went to Hamburgh. Towards night Mother & I went whortleberring picked 2 qts, l pt. Commenced to alter over a dress.
Tue Aug 19 Pleasant.. Ironed forenoon, sewed afternoon.
Wed Aug 20 Ironed some & sewed some. Sterling arrived last night & sailed this morning for Hartford.
Thur Aug 21 1862 Helped wash some & went a berrying with Ernest & finished my dress. Received 6 returned letters from New Orleans, concluded Henry is on his way home.
Fri Aug 22 Am not very well. Sewed for Mrs.. Damon in the afternoon
. Sat Aug 23 Sewed. Nearly made a shirt. Ellen & Bell came home. Married sometime during this month James Ceary and A New York lady. Imogene Dewey and a Mr.. Bushnell.
Sun Aug 24 Pleasant, afternoon attended a lecture by Miss Beckwith. Sterling arrived at 4 P.M. Celia & Margaret Brockway called. Evening Cherillo Griswold & Willis Bellows married.
Mon Aug 25 Washed. Finished off my 5 shirt for Henry, commenced another. Sterling went to Essex.
Tue Aug 26 Ironed some & sewed some.
Wed Aug 27 Afternoon attended Society at Mrs.. Brockway's. Mr.. Tiler Dennison buried in Essex.
Thur Aug 28 Finished off a shirt for Father. Unpleasant most of the day.
Fri Aug 29 I spent the day at Mrs.. Jonathan LaPlace's. Mrs.. Jane Brockway Cury had a son born this month.
Sat Aug 30 Pleasant. Sewed for Mother.
Sun Aug 31 Pleasant, am not very well.
