December 1855

Sat Dec 1 A pleasant day. Kate Ely and Thomas Brockway were married Thursday evening. Mrs Lizzie pratt died in Essex on Wednesday. Mr Benjamin Brockway died yesterday in Essex also Mrs Holmes of Hadlyme. Miss Nancy Tripp died in Essex today of the consumption aged 17. I made me a hood.
Sun Dec 2 A foggy and pleasant day rained a little in the afternoon and evening. I went to meeting, Mr Dixon preached.
Tue Dec 4 Mother and I cleaned pantry. Isabel 11 years old. Ellen and I spent the evening at Mrs Hannah Brockway's. Arthur Ely and Angenette Tooker spent the night here. Isabel and Angenette went to Ellen LaPlaces to a party in the evening. Eliza W & Sevens and Elbert B called here in the evening.
Wed Dec 5 A pleasant day. We cleaned kitchen. I carried Mr Edwin Banning across the river he paid me .10cts.
Thu. Dec 6 Another pleasant day. I made Aunt Mary Ann a hood. Mr Hungerford took dinnner hre. Mrs Harrison spent the afternoon here. Mrs Brockway and Celia and Janie Marten spent the evening here.
Fri Dec 7 Pleasant most of the day. I made Augusta Ely a hood.
Sat Dec 8 Pleasant. In the forenoon I cut my delaine dress. In the afternoon went over to Hamburgh I carried over Aunt Mary Ann and Augusta's hood and recived .50 cts. for making them. I rode part-way home with F LaPlace.
Mon Dec 10 Clear, but windy and quite cold we postponed washing, and I sewed on my dress. John Damon 21 years old and Lewis 7 and Matilda LaPlace had a son born.
Tue Dec 11 Another clear but windy day. Oscar came home from coasting - brought me a (port monie)
Fri 14 Pleasant, rive froze over the night before. I was about sick with a hard cold.
Sat Dec 15 A rainy day. I was prevented from sewing by having a sore thumb and finger.
Sun Dec 16 A rainy day river broke up the night before.
Mon Dec 17 A pleasant day we washed. I rec'e a letter from Harriet Tooker. 2 Schooners went down the river and the ³Portland² towed up 5 schooners and a sloop.
Wed Dec 19 Pleasant. I ironed some and sewed some. Mother cleaned house. Heber presented Mother and I a Gold dollar.
Sat Dec 22 It rained most of the day, I received a letter from Martha Kirkland.
Mon Dec 24 Cloudy most of the day, we washed. Christmas eve, John Elliott called and invited me to attend a ball with him the next night, but I declined. Heber went to Essex to meeting he called at Mr Buckingham's on his way home and Tom and Albert sent me some apples.
Tue Dec 25 Christmas. It rained most of the day. I started to go to Essex, but the rain prevented me. Heber went and attended the fair in the Methodist Church. Philenda was there and sent me a broken chvealet segar - just like hers. Ellen went to Hamburgh & purchased herself and me a domestic gingham dress. I cut my (am-----) waist Isabel went over to Angenette Tookers to spend the night. The girls from this way did not go to the ball.
Thu Dec 27 A clear day, but quite cold. The river froze over last night, but the ice was running this morning, but was stopped. I attended the Society at Mrs Harrison's. Some Deep River gentlemen came across the river in the evening and attended the Society, they came part way on the ice and the rest in a boat.
