Sat Jan 31 A stormy day. I did a very little sewing, a very little knitting, and not much of any thing some of the time. The last day of Jan. 1857 and what a dreary cold month we have had! The river is frozen over, and there is a great quanity of snow on the ground although not as deep as it has been. It rains and the wind blows very hard, and I had ought to be thankful that I am in so good a harbor. I pity the poor marriner who is obliged to be out this stormy day. There has been a great many disasters during the past month - many a poor sailor found the ocean his grave. Married this month Lucinda Dolph to Mr Smith also Martha Kirkland to Mr Alexander.
