March-April 1857

Mon. Mar 2 It snowed all day and was quite cold. I commenced to quilt my bed-quilt. German opera.
Wed Mar 4 Cloudy most of the day. We washed. The Hon. James Buchanan takes the presidents chair today. Harriet came over to spent the night with me.
Thu Mar 5 Cloudy most of the day rained some in the evening. Harriet Tooker spend the day with me and helped me quilt. We cut our undersleeves and intended to make them alike we spent the evening at Mr Rosewell LaPlace's from there Harriet went home.
Sat Mar 7 The ice has blocked in here, and is very windy and quite cold. I finished off my quilt at 10 o'clock A.M.
Sun Mar 8 A clear day, but rather cold. Heber and John came up from Essex they came part way in a boat and the rest on the ice.
Tue Mar 10 A clear but cold day. Heber and John came home about noon. Philenda sent me a thimble. Mr John Mitchel died very suddenly last night, aged 82. Mr. Horace Pratt died night before last.
Wed Mar 11 The last singing school this evening.
Thu Mar 12 Pleasant. The Ladies Sewing Society met at Mrs Nancy Damons where they reorganized. I did not attend.
Fri. Mar 13 Pleasant. I visited Miss Warner's school in the afternoon in company with Elizabeth Warner, Emma Warner, Geo. Warner and Joseph Warner. I went home with Emma and took tea, and tarried there till evening when there was a party.
Sat Mar 14 Miss Warners school closed. Mrs U Warner had a son born.
Wed Mar 18 1857 Father 47 years old.
Fri. Mar 20 Betsy Beebe second daughter born yesterday.
Thu. Mar 26 A windy day. Mother received a letter from Mrs Lee, Aunt Emeline and Uncle Jacob. Aunt and Uncle wished Mother and Father to go to Chelsea and make them a visit. They prepared themselves and started tonight.
Fri. Mar 27 Leora Chapel and John Damon spent the day here. A lecture in the evening at the school-house. Oscar went, after the lecture Joseph Warner and Mr Phelps called
. Sun Mar 29 Towards night, Carrie LaPlace and Emma Warner called. Joseph Warner called in the evening.
Fri. Apr. 3. Mother and Father returned home this evening. Oscar is going to sea with Uncle Joseph.
Sat Apr. 4 Oscar left - he will take the boat to Hartford, and from there Monday morning will take the cars to Boston.
Wed. Apr. 8 I went to Mr (Lelclen) Warnerrs in Hadlyme and was examined to take over school. Father carried me up the cove in a boat.
Mon Apr 13 It was cloudy most of the day. I commenced my school with 27 pupils.
Thu Apr 16 Clear in the forenoon, cloudy afternoon and evening. Emma Warner called at the school-house and took Jane's books as she is sick. Mary Marten and Celia Brockway visited my school in the afternoon. Mr Kelsey called on me after school. I spent the evening at Mrs Hannah Brockway's.
Mon 20 A very rainy day, therefore did not teach school.
Thu Apr. 30 Pleasant, finds me boarding at Mri. Jonathan LaPlaces. I went to the Society from school at Mr. Selden Warner's. Joseph Warner was there and bade me good bye, he goes West next week.
