The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1857

May, June 1857

Wed May 1 Election day and very pleasant. I am now boarding at Aunt Mary Anns. Harriet Tooker came down towards night, and we went down to the stores, then up to Mrs Higby's to get some beer, but she had some that was not worked.
Thu. May 7 Pleasant, at night Imogene McCrery, Harriet Tooker, Alice and I went up to Mrs Higby's and got some beer, and took into the Ely burying ground, then we went up to Mr Ulysses Warners and called we found Eliza Williams and Emma Warner there. The band was out. I bought me a green and white gingham dress of a peddler this morning.
Fri May 8 A pleasant day. Harriet Tooker came over to my school in the afternoon and came home with me and spent the night.
Sat May 9 A pleasant day. In the morning Harriet and I crossed the river and walked to Essex we called at Eliza Williams'es, Philenda Williams'es, Dr Shepard's and to the stores and Milliners: - we purchased us a pink and white calico dress at Mr Edward Pratt's - then we went to Mrs Watrouses and took dinner, from there to Eliza's and spent the afternoon then came home. On our way home we met Carlos Warner.
Sun May 17 I answered a letter which I received from Joseph Warner yesterday. He was in Detroit, Mich. when he wrote and was going from thence to ( Ontanagen) I went up to Mr Miners with Gilbert LaPlace and spent the evening.
Wed May 20 Emma Warner 19 years old.
Sun May 24 It is a beautiful day and was yesterday. Yesterday forenoon I cut my pink calico dress, and in the afternoon went to Essex with Caroline Miner we went down in a boat with Mr Henry Beebe and walked back. We calledat the Milliner's and ordered a hat made for each of us of ribbon and straw, her ribbon purple and white plaid and mine white with a blue edge. I received a letter from Mrs Martha (Pierpont) New Haven.
Tue May 26 I am boarding at Mrs Jefferson Warner's. After school I commenced taking lesson in dress cutting of Celia Williams.
Thu May 28 In the evening Emma and I attended the Society at Uncle Frank's. Dr. Leechman and Mr Keep were there. I found a school bell tied on the knob to the school-house door.
Sun May 31 It is the last day of May and is quite pleasant. I found a boquet of lilacs of the door step this morning.
Mon Jun 1 1857 An unpleasant day. Mrs Culver was buried she died on Saturday.
Tue Jun 2 Pleasant, after school I went to Essex with Caroline Warner, and Caroline Miner and got my hat also a bloomer We went to the ice-cream salon with John Damon and had some ice-cream, then came home with him and Mr Eliphat Brockway and Heber, in a boat.
Wed Jun 3 A pleasant day. Mr Keep walked to the school-house with me and called, and in the evening he came up to Mrs Warner's with Dr. Leechman and Ebenezer Brockway.
Fri Jun 5 A cloudy day. I finished boarding at Mrs Warner's. Mr William A. Banning died this afternoon about 3 o'clock aged 48 years. He leaves a wife and 3 children. His death was caused by a cancerous tumor.
Sat Jun 6 Mr Banning buried - funeral held at one o'clock. Capt.. Richard Williams'es wife is to be buried tomorrow - she died last Monday.
Sat 13 Jazeb Comstock and Eleanora Comstock were married last Sabbath. The Union store in Hamburgh was burned last Tuesday night.
