The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1855

June 1855


Fri Jun 1 It was cloudy, rained a little in the morning and some at night. Ellen and Lewis stayed at home from school about 11 o'clock they went down on the wharf a fishing, Mary Miner was there with them and about 1/2 past 11 Ellen came up to the house to get a fishhook and while she was here I heard Mary saying as loud as she could "Louie is off the dock" Father was a bed, fore he was out the night before fishing, and he heard her and jumped out the bed and ran down and jumped off the wharf and caught him just as he was sinking. Eliza williams called here at night on her way home. Jennie Warner was with her.
Sat Jun 2 Was a rainy day. Mother calculated to come home to day in the Cricket, but the C did not go up yesterday, so Mother came down to Deep River in the night boat, City of Hartford. Jonathan LaPlace met them there and brought them home. Mother got her a new black dress, me a (mantill-) and Mr Lee sent me a pin.
Mon Jun 4 It was foggy and rainy in the morning, about noon broke away and was quite warm. I finished working my collar. Albert Ely spent the night here. Towards night I went across the river and went down to Philenda's to spend the night, on my way down, I called at Louisa Posts, Asa Brockways and Capt. Watrouses. Philenda and I called over to Celia Pratts from there we went to the Point.
Tue Jun 5 Was a pleasant day. I came home in the morning and helped Mother wash, at night planted some seeds in the flower-garden.
Wed Jun 6 I sewed. A pleasant day. at night Ellen and I carried Eliza Williams across the river, after that I started to go to Harriet LaPlaces, but met her and we stopped to Frank's and went into the garden then went and called on Marion and they came home with me and called. I found Heber at home. Isabel went over to Aunt Mary Anns to spend the night and Arthur came here.
Sat Jun 9 A pleasant day. I finished off a shirt I had been making for Heber the first bosom shirt I ever made alone. News came that Howland Gates was dead. I received a letter from Marrion Watrous. Harriet LaPlace and Emma Warner spent the afternoon here. Eliza Williams came here from school after tea we went up to Wintergreen island in a row boat, we took turns in rowing. Eliza and Ellen rowed more than the rest. When we arrived there Emma and i jumped out first and Harriet undertook to and fell into the water and we laughed at her, well we did not stay long for Harriet was wet and cold we picked a few spears of wintergreen then started for home. We had a good time. Mrs Rosette Taylor & Elizabeth Banning called her they landed from the ²Cricket², Mr Joseph Selden, Mr Wells and another man landed also.
Sun Jun 10 It rained some in the morning but soon cleared off and I went to meeting Mr Wilkey preached. At 5 o'clock there was a singing school Mr Jennings was down, after it closed Eliza Williams, Carlos Warner and I called at Mr Frank LaPlaces and had an introduction to Mr Wilkey's wife.
Mon Jun 11 It was cloudy in the morning, but cleared off warm. we washed. Mrs Taylor and Elizabeth Banning called here, they took the ²Cricket² for home. Caroline called with them.
Tue Jul 12 n It was rainy in the morning but soon cleared away and at noon it was quite warm. I sewed a calico dress for the baby, one that Mrs Prentis made me a present of last summer.
Wed Jun 13 A pleasant day. in the afternoon I went over to Harriet Tookers to a quilting, there was about a dozen ladies ther in the afternoon and about as many gentlemen in the evening: after tea we took a walk up onto Candlewood Ledge, after that Carlos warner, Emma Warner and I went across the cove with Victoria Hinman, just as we reached the shore, going over Emma jumped up and came very near falling overboard. She wet her bonnet and some of her other clothes. I spent the night with Harriet Tooker. Eliza Williams was boarding there.
Thu Jun 14 A pleasant day with a shower towards night. I came over with Eliza in the morning, and called at the schoolhouse a short time, and to Harriet LaPlaces, she was making herself a black silk dress. Frank LaPlace & Cecelia Davis called here, they went on board of the ²Cricket². Mother went up to Mrs Miner's and spent the afternoon. Mrs Matilda LaPlace and Czarina were there.
Mon Jun 18 A pleasant day, in the forenoon we washed, in the afternoon Mother went to Essex. Mr (Irelises) Gates called here.
Tue Jun 19 Was a cloudy day, rained some in the afternoon. I kept house, ironed some in the forenoon. Mother came home at night.
Thu Jun 21 A very warm day. In the afternoon I went up to Mrs Congdon's to the Society & came home about dark.
Fri Jun 22. Was a cloudy day - towards night fogged up and in the evening rained quite hard. I went down to Mrs Betsy Beebe's with Emma Warner and it rained so that we spent the night - had a good time playing back gammon and checkers.
Sat Jun 23 Was a warm day. I came home in the morning, Mother had gone to Hamburgh with Father, Mr Charles Harrison brought her back at night. Eliza Williams came here from school
Sun Jun 24 A cloudy day. I went to meeting, it rained very hard when meeting closed, we waited till after the shower then I went up to Mrs Matilda LaPlaces with Caroline Warner and took tea and came home about dark.
Mon Jun 25 A cloudy day - rained hard about 9 A.M. and again about 4 P.M. Mother and I made a fine shirt for H.
Wed Jun 26 A warm day. I went over to Hamburgh with Oscar in a boat & Victoria Hinman came home with us, at night we called on she is keeping house for her Grandmother there was several young people there - we went over and stopped to the store and got some lemonade.
Thu Jun 28 It was pleasant in the morning - a shower about 11 in the forenoon and a thunder shower in the afternoon. Philenda Williams and Celia Pratt came up here in the morning. In the afternoon Cecelia cut Mother's black silk dress. I sewed some on it. Miss Sarah Stevens was married the day before to a gentleman from N.Y. . She received some very nice presents from his relations.
Fri Jun 29 A very warm day. I sewed some on Motherıs dress. The young people went up to Wintergreen Island. Victoria, Philenda, Ellen, Oscar and I went. We had a very nice time.
Sat Jun 30 Was another warm day. Celia finished Mothers dress and cut over a muslin for me. I finished it in the evening. Celia, Philenda and Victoria went home in the afternoon. Mother received a letter from Aunt Emeline she is living in (Saxonville) 20 miles from Boston. Elizabeth Whittermore died, aged 26.
