June-August 1958

Wed Jun 16 Joseph Warner called, he arrived home the 28 of last month.
Mon Jun 21 Mother took the L. Boardman to Hartford.
Thu Jun 24 Mother returned home to-day, I attended a ball in East Haddam the opening of the Champion house. I went with Gib.
Sun Jul 4 A warm day, I went to Church in Hamburgh. There were 10 taken in.
Mon Jul 5 Vacation this week. I arose early this morning and went to washing about 6 o'clock Gilbert LaPlace came and invited Ellen and I to go a sailing, and about 9 o'clock we started. We went down to Lyme Ferry and stopped and took dinner and stopped to the Fenwick house, from there to essex, went to the ice-cream saloon, and from there to Deep River and then home. Henry Lord was my escort.
Thu Jul 8 A warm day. Oscar took a boat and carried me down to the Flat Rock and I walked from there to Uncle Williams. Harriet Tooker is there at work.
Sun Jul 18 Jennie Whittermore died aged 19.
Fri Jul 30 Mrs Hungerford and three children came home to make a visit.
Sat Aug 7 Mr Rosewell LaPlace here at work building a verrandah and enlarging our parlor, he commenced last Monday, Mary Ward Williams is here visiting Isabel. In the afternoon George Warner and I started to go to Centerbrook to visit Maria Buckingham's school. There came up a shower so we stopped to Capt.. Watrouses till it was over then went on but found Maria had no school this week. We returned to Essex called at Philenda's then down to Edward Pratts and took tea then returned home. We had some of Miss Caroline Haydens wedding cake 5 specimens.
Thu Aug 12 The Joshuatown Ladies Sewing Society met at Mrs (D---ate) Tookers. I attended. Mr Lord escorted me home.
Sun Aug 15 I wrote a letter to Mrs Cagin Chelsea informing her that we received the piano-forte the 10.
Sun Aug 22 I have not written much in my journal for sometime, but will endeavor to write a little more now. It has been a beautiful day. I went onto the hill to-day and wrote a letter to Harriet Tooker, she is in New Haven. I wrote the letter while sitting under an oak tree the same one that she and I sat under one day and read, and viewed the scenery about us. Yesterday Mother and I papered the parlor I practice about two hours a day usualy yesterday I only practiced one. I have learned one accompaniment - the first I ever learned. "The Old Folks at Home." Mrs Joseph Southworth is at Mr Ulysses Warner's he came from N.Y. Wednedsday. Mr Selden Warner visited my school day before yesterday, it closes in two weeks.
Sun Aug 29 A warm day. It has been quite pleasant during the past week, with the exception of yesterday when it was rainy. There has been a camp-meeting in Haddam. Quite a number went up from here. Tue eve. Joseph Southworth and Geo Warner called and invited me to go to Caroline LaPlaces and spend the eve and I went. Wed. Mrs Lee came here from Middletown and went from here to East Haddam on Saturday. Thurs eve Geo. Warner and Jos. Southworth spent the eve here. Some time during the fore past of the week Mr James Post of Essex and his brother in-law that was married about 3 weks ago were off in the sound in a boat and while Mr Post was forward his brother in-law accidentally fell overboard and was drowned. He was a good swimmer and swam some time, but the wind blew very hard and as Mr Post was not much used to a boat he could not get to him to save him, so he perished.
