Transcribed by Betsy Ross Averill

September-November 1958

Sun Sep 5 Oscar came home from New Haven night-before last sick with the dysentery the Dr. called to see him yesterday. We expected Aunt Emeline to come here on the Thursday night boat, and Father went to meet her but she did not come. I attended the Society at Mrs Marcus Beebe's that afternoon and evening there was quite a large number there. I drew a bed-quilt "The Irish Chain" in lottery. I do not know who put my name down I did not it was on the paper til I was informed the bed-quilt was mine. I rode home with Mr Lauristin Mack of East Haddam. My school closed on Friday, I have numbered 62 pupils an average of 33 daily. Tuesday afternoon Mrs Hunt, Mrs Southworth and Mrs Beebe spent the afternoon here. Wed Uncle William Ely and family and Aunt Mary Ann & 2 girls spent the day here.
Thu Sep 9 Mother and I prepared ourselves to go to MeadowWoods, but were prevented by Aunt Emeline's arrival with her 3 children. They came from N.Y. on the Granite State last night to Essex and came from Essex on the L. Boardman to-day.

Sat Sep 18 Some of the young pople were in, in the evening. Joseph Southworth called and bade us good-bye as he goes home to-night.
Sun Sep 19 Mother is sick, and I have performed to-day as "chief cook and bottle washer" which has made the day seem short to me.

Thu Nov 18 A pleasant day. I came home from Mrs Anderson's this afternoon where I have been doing some sewing. I sewed for Mrs Betsy Beebe last week. It being Ellen's 18 birth day, she gave a party in the evening there were about 25 here. Henry Lord presented me a handkerchief.
Wed Nov 24 Harriet Tooker came over here this morning to make Lewis a jacket. Emma Warner spent the afternoon here. Ellen Brockway called. I went over to Mrs Annie Warner's with Harriet and spent the night.
Thu Nov 25 Thanksgiving day. Harriet went home this morning and invited me to go over there this afternoon, and I acepted the invitation.
