The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1855

September 1855


Sun Sep 2 1855 Was a warm day. I went to meeting, also to a 5 o'clock lecture delivered by Mr Chas H. Wood on "The progress of ages and demand of Time". Eliza Wms came home with me from meeting and took supper. In the evening we called up to Mr Selden Warner.
Tue Sep 4 1855 Cloudy most of the day. Uncle Wm and wife, Uncle Calvin and wife, Aunt Mary Ann and Grandmother came her and spent the day Grandmother spent the night. Mrs Brockway & Celia spent the evening here.
Wed Sep 5 A pleasant day. Mr Trask and wife and child came ashore from the steamboat. Mrs Banning, Mrs Cleveland, Mrs Phelps and 2 children Caroline Warner & Angeline Warner spent the afternoon here, Annie brought her baby with her, Hattie Inez. Eliza Wms came here to board. Mrs Cleveland went from here to Mr David Warner Eliza & I went down in the boat with them and came up with Oscar. Carlos came up with us and spent the evening.
Thu Sep 6 It was foggy in the morning but pleasant through the day. I attended the Society at Mrs Oren Bannings. Eliza stopped there from school.
Fri Sep 7 A pleasant day. Grandmother went home. In the afternoon Mother went to Hamburgh she bought me a calico dress. Towards night Ellen and I called up to Emma Warner and from there up to Mrs Nancy LaPlaces and came home in the evening.
Sat Sep 8 A warm day. I was taken sick in the night and was sick through the day but better at night. Eliza went home.
Mon Sep 10 A pleasant day, we washed. Adelaide Chienden spent the night here. Mr Kelsey, John Damon & Ebenzer Brockway spend the evening here. Eliza spent the night and finished boarding here. Wm Pitt Ely came here and spent the night.
Tue Sep 11 A pleasant day.I went home with Pitt in the morning to spend the week and do some sewing.
Wed Sep 12 A warm day. In the evening Harriet Tooker & Elizabeth Hughes called on me, Harriet is at work for the Brockways.
Thu Sep 13 It was cloudy some and not quite as warm as the day before. In the evening Wm Pitt and I called down to Mrs Brockway's. Harriet went up stairs with us and spent the evening with Miss Mary Russel, she moved there this week.
Fri Sep 14 A pleasant day, cool in the morning and cooler through the day than the day before. Mrs Miller and Sarah Jane Anderson called at Aunt Emma's. Wm Pitt received a letter from John Stark.
Sat Sep 15 Cloudy most of the day. I left Uncle Wms at night, re'd $1.25 cts. for sewing. Stopped to the stores and purchased me a pair of gaiters for which I paid $l.35 cts. found Oscar there and came home in the boat with him.
Mon Sep 17 It was foggy in the morning but cleared off warm. I cut me a calico dress and partly made it. Towards night I called up to Mrs Warner's, Emma had gone to Hebron to work in a silk mill.
Thu Sep 20 A pleasant day. I went down to Essex in a boat with Father in the morning and went to Philenda's, her Mother went up to Mrs Mary Doanes with Mrs Stannard. I called to Capt. Watrouses on my way home and rode up with Tom Williams from there and Lunner Buckingham set me across the river, and in the evening I went up to Celia Brockway's she has a little party. They treated us to Watermelon and nuts.
Fri Sep 21 It was cloudy most of the day, rained at night. I sewed. Towards night Hester Wood called here.
Sun Sep 23 It was cloudy most of the day rained a little. Elbert Buckingham took supper with Oscar.
Mon Sep 24 A pleasant day. We washed. In the afternoon Oscar carried me over to Hamburgh in a boat and I went down to Uncle Wms. In the evening Aunt Emma & I called down to Mrs Tinkers they gave us a piece of cheese.
Tue Sep 25 It was pleasant in the morning, afternoon cloudy but a pleasant moonlight evening. In the evening Aunt Emma & I called down to Mrs Lucy Brockway's she has another son about a week old.
Wed Sep 26 It was cloudy most of the day and evening. Uncle William went to Essex and bought him a new stove, the Roger Williams
Sat Sep 29 A pleasant day. I finished working at Uncle Williams & received $1.00 for my work.
Sun Sep 30 It is the last day of September, and has been a cloudy day. I went to meeting in the evening, Mr Loveland preached. Eliza Wms spent the night with me.
