The Diary of Elizabeth Alice Ely 1856

Transcribed by Betsy Ross Averill

September 1956

Wed Sep. 3 How rapidly time flies when I commenced my school it seemed a very long time to look ahead 20 weeks for the last day of my school but those weeks have passed and I hardly realize it and to day I close my term, and how many pleasant days I have spent in the schoolroom! Although I have had tryals and troubles with some of my scholars, yet I have taken great pleasure and did my best to learn my pupils all that I could, and hoping they will always remember me as a teacher that has tryed to do her duty. I will bid them all good bye and it is not very probable I shall meet all of them in this school-room again. I have numbered 35 pupils an average of about 20.
Sun Sep 7 I attended church in Hamburgh. Adelaide Brockway was taken into church.
Mon Sep 8 Was a rainy unpleasant day. Mr Horace Kelsey took supper and Oscar went to Essex with him in the evening to witness the marriage of Alabama Collins to James Herlbert.
Sat Sep 13 A pleasant day. A shower towards night. Mary Jane Hull, Philenda Williams, and Edward spent the day here. Philenda's father called. Edward named the baby after himself and made him a present of $5 he said to get him a suit of colors with. Mary Jane, Philenda and I called at Mr Mitchels.
Mon Sep 15 Early in the morning Father and Oscar went down to Lyme Ferry depot with Mr R. A. Hungerford and family they are on their way to Illi. to live. Father went to Hartford in the "Cricket". Oscar 18 years old. I made him a present of a cup of water in his face.
Thu Sep 18 Emma Warner, Maria Buckingham and Jane Albee spent the afternoon here. Leora Chapel, George Warner, and John Damon called here they were going to Essex to a ball, and insisted very hard on our going with them but we would not. Richard Brockway spent the evening here.
