Mon Sep 1 A pleasant day. Mr Hunt, Mr Southworth, and Geo Warner called on my school, they invited me to go to Deep River with them they also invited Caroline LaPlace and Emma Warner and we went we went up in a boat and called at Capt.. Arnold's then went a riding in a hack together with Gilbert LaPlace and Emma Lord. We rode through MeadowWoods took in Kate Buckingham and went to Essex and called at Mr Henry Beebe's, stopped off against the saloon and got some beer and returned to Deep River, where we arrived at the Wahginnicut house 15 m past 11 we stopped there a few moments then returned home. It was a beautiful evening and we had a jolly time. As we got off against the wharf at home the steamboat went up it was quite foggy just then and she proceeded very slowly up the river.
Wed Sep. 2 Another pleasant day. Mrs Mary Williams and daughter Mary from Northampton, and Mrs T. Williams and Mrs Jane Pratt of Essex spent the day at our house. Capt.. W came after them. Mrs Southworth and Mrs Betsy Beebecalled and I went to Mrs Annie Warners with them and spent the evening. Mrs Hunt was there also.
Thu Sep. 3 It was a beautiful day. My school closed. I have numbered 65 pupils an average of over 40. I received $45. for my Summer's toil.
Fri Sep 4 A pleasant day. Ellen and I went a sailing with Caroline LaPlace, Harriet LaPlace, Emma Warner, Zeb Warner, Mr Hunt, Mr Southworth, Geo Warner, and Willie Hunt. We all left home about 11 o'clock, sailed down as far as Lyme Ferry where we called and took dinner, then sailed down over the bar, returned to Saybrook and got some beer and nuts, then came home where we arrived about half past nine in the evening. Sat Sep 5 A pleasant day. The Mary Atwater came up the river to day. Mr Hunt left for New York to night.
Mon Sep 7 Towards night Mother and I called at the Miners to see their little girl Anna who has been quite sick with the dysentery, but is better now. Hattie has been quite sick also.
Wed Sep 9 i received a letter from Harriet Tooker and one from Aunt Emeline. Aunt Emeline wishes me to go and spent the winter with her, and I think I shall. I answered the letter to-day.
Thu Sep. 10 Still another pleasant day. Mr Pierpont and wife, Uncle Horace & wife, Uncle Calvin & wife, and Monroe Brockway and wife spent the afternoon at our house. I attended the Ladies Sewing Society in the evening at Mr Frank LaPlaces.
Fri Sep 11 I commenced to quilt on my checkerboard bed quilt. Mr Southworth called and quilted a few stiches - his first lesson, he bids me good bye as he leaves for N.Y. to-night.
Sat Sep 12 A cloudy unpleasant day. I quilted till 4 o'clock. Emma came down and helped me quilt till 4 then we went to Deep River to see the schooner May launched, but we were too late: we went in a boat with Clarissa G, Caroline M, Marcus B and Orin Miner.
Tue Sep 15 Was a pleasant day. In the afternoon I went to Hamburgh. I went over in a boat with Wm Martin and his sister Nancy. The wind blew very hard, and just before the boat reached the dock in Hamburgh, the wind blew it towards the shore, and the sail went against a stake and tore it bad. I walked home and called at Aunt Mary Ann's, she has been sick with the Dysentery, but is better now. I took tea at Emma Warner's.
Thu Sep. 17 An unpleasant day. I had invited in some girls to help me quilt, but on account of the weather they did not come. (There were a few gentlemen came in the evening, Marion Chapel spent the night.) Mistake.
Fri Sep 18 A pleasant day. The girls that I invited yesterday came to day. A few gentlemen came in the evening, Marion Chapel spent the night. Yesterday I received a letter from Lizzie Williams of Northampton, with Rebecca's wedding card enclosed, she married a Mr Corwin of Brooklyn N.Y..
Thu Sep 24 A very pleasant day. I attended the Sewing Society afternoon and evening at Mr Jonathan LaPlaces. Mr L & wife came home from Norwich this afternoon. Mrs Ricke lost her babe but a short time since. Clarissa Gillet went home and Caroline Miner went with her.
Sat Sep 26 Towards night I went up street to get the papers & met Mary Lay and Emma warner coming to call on me, they turned and went back with me. Emma gave me a book which was sent to me from N.Y. it was Lord Byron's practical works, she had some of Thomas Moor's works they were presents from Mr Richard Hunt. There were two cards in each book.
Sun Sep 27 Another pleasant day. I went to church at Hamburgh. The Rev. Mr Bernard of Lyme Town preached. After meeting Emma Warner and I went home with Aunt Emma and called.
Tue. Sep 29 This morning I have seated myself at my window, to look out and view the scenery about me. The sun rose very clear and now there is scarce a cloud to be seen, except away at the southward. The wind is blowing very fresh at the northard and several vessels are to be seen, some boating up the river, and some sailing down: there was a little sloop hove to at the other wharf. Capt.. Tooker's vessel lays at the mouth of Hamburgh cove and Capt.. Hayden's lays at Essex. Ulysses Warner is 24 years old. Dr. Ely's wife had a son born a week ago last night. This afternoon I went up to Caroline Warner's and she went with me up to Mrs Abby Phelpses. I went to Emma Warner's and spent the night.Return to Home Page, Diary Index, July-August, or November
