Notes

Merritt served in the Civil War as a second Lt.. He enlisted 16 Aug 1862, mustered in 10 Nov 1862 and mustered out 17 Aug 1863 and served in Co. C 26th Regiment Infantry. This was the same company as Ulysses S. Warner who was wounded 14 Jun 1863 at Port Hudson,LA and died 1 Jul 1863.

His age at the time of his marriage was listed as 20 making his birth year 1838. Comstock genealogy notes his birth year as 1835.

Merritt married a second time to Sarah Martin on 12 Oct 1894. His second wife died 9 Apr 1937. Since his first wife Sarah Jane Lord died in 1917 we can conclude that they must have been divorced. Merritt's last child was born 26 Jan 1896 two years after his marriage to Sarah Martin. Her name was Jane Eleanor Comstock and she married Joseph Warnke and in 1945 lived in Camden. NJ at 418 Vine Street.

If the above is true then Merritt's last child was born when he was 61!!
