John
Griswold Ely, husband
of Caroline Pratt Williams Ely and father of
Elizabeth Alice Ely, began to keep a journal in 1842.
Here he recorded his busines activities as cooper and
merchant. He made and inspected barrels, owned an
interest in the sloop "Henry Clay",
provided wharfage for his friends, and rented his
scow to transport ship timber and salt meadow hay.
The journals are presented
five pages at a time to make them easier to read on
the web. The format for each section is as follows:
The first number to the left
is the number of the page in the journal on which the
entry occurs. The date of the entry is next followed
by the text of the entry and the value on the
transaction in dollars and cents.
Here
is an image of the portion of page 54 that contains
John G. Ely's final accounting for his brother Ansel
R. Ely dated January 29th 1861. This is a 105K image
that fills the screen and requires scrolling to view
the entire image.
I have also added an image of
the poignant entry
reflecting the death of John Griswold Ely on page 56
of the journal. This a large image (259K) that takes
a lot of screen space and requires scrolling.
If those of you who read the
journals have any thoughts on how their presentation
might by improved, please send them on to me.
